“I love being a writer. What I can’t stand is the paperwork. “
So said American novelist Peter de Vries.
It’s a nice play on words, and just the sort of thing a clever satirist would write, but there’s more truth in it than meets the eye.
When they told me that every writer should have his own website, my heart sank.
Surely, I thought, writing is hard enough already? It takes up all my time just trying to get words on a page in some sort of meaningful sequence. Now I’ve got to maintain a website as well?
But they insisted. Keeping an author website, they explained, is just like filling in your tax return or cleaning the crumbs out of your keyboard; one of those necessary unpaid duties that comes with the job.
It’s called admin, or the paperwork, if you like.
I’m beginning to see what Peter de Vries meant.
Ah well. Here goes. . .
Ladies and gentlemen. My author website!
I promise to try and make it interesting, and keep it up to date.
Trouble is, I’m not much good at paperwork.
